SLOW MUSIC FOR FAST TIMES STEPHEN HILL— President, Producer, Art Director
Created Music from the Hearts of Space in 1973 as a weekly three-hour local radio program on KPFA-FM in Berkeley, CA. National syndication of a one hour version of the program began in 1983 and grew to a network of over 290 NPR affiliate stations. Stephen and original partner ANNA TURNER then launched Hearts of Space Records in 1984. After over 150 releases, the label was sold to Valley Entertainment in 2001. As a producer Hill has created thousands of radio broadcasts and dozens of record albums and soundtracks, including an Academy Award-winning feature length documentary. In addition to hosting and directing the production of the radio program, Hill directed A&R for the HOS record labels, and has served as in-house Creative Director of packaging graphics, print, the HOS web site and mobile apps. He continues to produce the radio program with Steve Davis, produces new compilations for Valley Entertainment/Hearts of Space, and works on Hearts of Space Online — an Internet streaming service for ambient, space, and contemplative music from around the world and across the centuries.
LEYLA RAEL HILL— VP Business Affairs
Leyla worked as business manager and publishing administrator for author, composer and philosopher Dane Rudhyar until his death in 1985. In 1986 she moved her publishing experience and administrative skills into the music business and joined her husband Stephen Hill as the general manager of the nascent Hearts of Space Records. Under her practical and disciplined direction the company survived and prospered in the rough and tumble environment of independent music, grew from one to a peak of 22 employees, and sold over 3 million records. She currently oversees all business and legal affairs and customer service for the company. Without Leyla, Hearts of Space would have quietly disappeared years ago.
*STEVE DAVIS— Radio Associate Producer
Steve Davis has been Associate Producer for Hearts of Space Radio since February 1997. He was a technical writer for several software companies before coming to Hearts of Space. He has had a strong interest in music since he began playing the guitar at age 12. He studied composition, electronic music synthesis, and Indonesian gamelan at San Jose State University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Creative Arts in 1984. An avid music collector, Davis has been immersed in the various genres that Hearts of Space Radio explores for more than 25 years. Since 1985, he has hosted "Neptune Currents," a weekly spacemusic program on KKUP-FM, a non-commercial community radio station in the heart of Silicon Valley.
SHEILA GERZOFF— Director Stations Relations & Marketing
Sheila began her career with Hearts of SpaceRadio in May 1984 as a public relations consultant. On the heels of a successful nationwide press campaign Sheila was asked to apply her talents to program distribution and station relations. She has served as the show's Director of Station Relations & Marketing since 1985. Prior to joining Hearts of Space, Sheila had a public relations business working with clients in the arts and community services. Her career began in television production, where she received a Northern California Emmy Award for her work on "Keep the Faith," a perspective on Bay Area religion produced in 1977 for KGO-TV, San Francisco.
